Grupo El Fuerte backs youngsters with work experience programmes
23% of the staff from Marbella headquarters began with work experience
Madrid, 7th of September 2007
Grupo El Fuerte has had 107 students doing work experience training in different work centres, and 20% of these have gone on to make up part of the team in 2007. What’s more, of the 100 workers in the Marbella centre (the Group’s total number of workers stands at 800) 23% began by doing work experience. There are currently 25 students, spread out among the different areas, on work experience at Grupo El Fuerte.
Due to the great service demands from within Grupo El Fuerte, there is a significant need for supporting staff in the different departments. Grupo El Fuerte has been offering work experience to students studying the most in-demand jobs for 8 years now, and in some cases, this is then used as a recruitment tool for possible vacancies.
Those in greatest demand are students from catering and hotel management to work in service, kitchens and accommodation, as this sector has the greatest number of employees and is the most mobile, but students are also needed to work in head office departments. The students are mainly from higher education training courses (administration, secretarial, information technology...), or university courses, namely Tourism, Advertising and Public Relations, Industrial Relations, Economics, Business Studies, etc.
Students come mainly from the Hotel and Catering Schools at Benalmádena (Malaga), Cadiz, CIO Mijas (Malaga), Galicia, Islantilla (Huelva) and Sevilla, and from the universities in Andalusia and various secondary education institutions, academies and private study centres, such as Les Roches in Marbella and CEADE in Seville. Each school sets the number of hours the student does, and the work experience is agreed between the company and the schools by signing a collaboration agreement stating that there is no industrial link or relationship between the student and the company. In some cases the experience is compulsory to complete the course and can last from between one and six months.
According to María Ceballos, Human Resources Director at Grupo El Fuerte, “the students provide important support to the hotel establishments during their work experience, as well bringing a vitality that comes from their youth and their application, one of the defining characteristics of the group”. She also states that “the hotel and catering students come with a good base to work with and learn quickly, whilst those posts related to administration, sales or human resources need time to adapt, as each department has a specific working method”.
“It’s usually tough at the beginning, as was the case for Grupo El Fuerte when it began some 50 years ago. That’s why the Group wants to give these young men and women a chance to start their professional lives with enthusiasm and excitement” states María Ceballos.

Grupo El Fuerte currently has six hotels in Spain, located in Marbella, Conil, El Rompido and Grazalema; they have a hotel in the Mayan Riviera, and are in the process of building the Hotel Secrets Montego Bay in Jamaica. With regard to the real estate sector, they have the Calaceite Residential Complex in Torrox and the All Suites Hotel Fuerte la Herradura in Almuñecar is due to open in 2009. Grupo El Fuerte also owns the Design and Interior Design Studio EID, which came about to meet the demand from Fuerte Hoteles. Last but not least, the Fuerte Foundation aims to collaborate in solving problems within the Group’s social surroundings.
