The Hotel El Fuerte held a conference on its 50 years of history

El Ateneo in Marbella organised the ‘El Fuerte, half a century of history’ conference on Friday the 14th of September, at 20:30 in the Europa Hall at the Hotel El Fuerte de Marbella.
The historian Lucía Prieto delivered the conference ‘El Fuerte, half a century of history’ in recognition of the hotel chain’s 50th Birthday and focused on the figure of José Luque Manzano, the Group’s founder, and the subject of research for a publication.
Lucía Prieto is the author of numerous articles on the Civil War and “Francoism” in Malaga; amongst the most outstanding titles are ‘Population and Civil War in Malaga: fall, exodus and refuge’ and ‘The Civil War in Marbella: revolution and repression in a coastal town.’The Hotel El Fuerte is the usual headquarters for the concerts or conferences held by the Marbella Branch of the Malaga Ateneo. Since its creation, the relationship between the two groups has been excellent, and our friends at the Ateneo consider El Fuerte ‘their second home.
Since it was created a year and a half ago, the Marbella Ateneo has held monthly exhibitions, conferences, concerts and other types of events aimed at promoting culture and public awareness of it in all its different manifestations, regardless of nationality.
The Ateneo Marbella
The Marbella Ateneo was opened in April 2006 as an extension of the Ateneo de Malaga, founded on the 16th of December 1966, on the initiative of a group of citizens with a love of science, arts and literature. The aim was to promote widespread cultural awareness. In its desire to contribute to the cultural development of the city, the Marbella Ateneo organises all types of activities including conferences, contests, exhibitions, debates, etc. Recently, artists of the standing of Arcadi Espada (journalist), Peter Viertel (script writer) or Marta Rivera (Finalist in the latest Planeta Award) have been invited.
Grupo el Fuerte
Grupo El Fuerte currently has six hotels in Spain, located in Marbella, Conil, El Rompido and Grazalema; they have a hotel in the Mayan Riviera, and are in the process of building the Hotel Secrets Montego Bay in Jamaica. With regard to the real estate sector, they have the Calaceite Residential Complex in Torrox and the All Suites Hotel Fuerte la Herradura in Almuñecar is due to open in 2009. Grupo El Fuerte also owns the Design and Interior Design Studio EID, created to meet the demand from Fuerte Hoteles. Last but not least, the Fuerte Foundation aims to collaborate in solving problems within the Group’s social surroundings.

50th Anniversary
In 2007, Grupo el Fuerte is celebrating its 50th birthday with weekly cocktail parties in the hotels. An organ concert took place on the 15th of June in the Iglesia de la Encarnación in Marbella, a party was held on the 4th of July in the Hotel El Fuerte and a painting exhibition is to be held in October. The Grupo has also published a book recounting its own history and that of Marbella.
