There is a total of 440 Biosphere Reserves all over the world. Spain, with 26 reserves, is the third country in the world with the largest number of them. Andalusia is the Spanish community with the largest number of biosphere reserves in Spain, having a total of 8 (covering 40% of Spain’s area). Our hotels are located a stone’s throw of 6 of these Andalusian reserves. Fuerte Marbella and Fuerte Miramar-SPA 8 Km away from Sierra de las Nieves and surroundings; Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park 5 Km away from Fuerte Grazalema; Fuerte el Rompido located 15 Km away from the Odiel Marshes, 119 Km away from the Dehesas de Sierra Morena and 91 Km away from the Doñana National Park, and the Sierra Nevada National Park is 109 Km away from Fuerte la Herradura.
Aware of the environmental problems, fuertehoteles.com believes in the environmental management of this sector, which, through the ISO 14001 standard, gives response to the current society’s concern for the environment in hotel management.

MANAGEMENT
- Ecology is part of hotel management.
- Ecological training for employees.
- Information for clients about ecological advances.
- Introduction of Environmental Management System ISO 14001.
ENERGY AND WATER
- Progressive replacement of the current lighting with low consumption lights.
- Installation of energy compensatory controls.
- Control of energy consumption by means of computerised systems.
- Use of temperature controllers at rooms.
- Control of water quality.
- Installation of automatic light controls by card in rooms.
- Information is given out to staff and guests about energy control measures.
- Double glazing is used in the doors and windows which supposes a heat energy saving.
- An automatic disconnecting switch in the air-conditioning before the opening of the doors and windows of the rooms.
- The installation of sanitary water, hot and cold is controlled by computer systems.
- Use of coolant gases according to the current laws for the protection of the ozone layer.
- Partial water discharge systems are used in the toilets.
- The kitchen's staff has received the necessary guidelines to rinse vegetables in saucepans whenever possible and to use the dishwasher at the highest possible capacity.
- We put information in the toilets about the importance of saving water.
- We change the towels or bed linen when the client wishes.
- The watering of plants and gardens is to be done by dripfeed and microaspersion.

PURCHASES. FOOD AND DRINK
- Use of ecological paper.
- Use of recyclable and/or returnable packaging.
- Use of detergents and cleaning products produced under environmental management systems.
- Choice of suppliers with ecological criteria.
- Buying wholesale to avoid unnecessary packaging.
- Dietetic and integral buffets for breakfast.
- Promotion of the consumption of natural, fresh and in season foods.
- Promotion of the consumption of produce from local farmers.
- Drinks are always served in glass or directly from barrels, except in the solarium areas.
- Promotion of the acquisition of products in glass as opposed to metal or paper containers and not plastic..
- Use of recycled computer material (ink cartridges, toners…).
- We avoid the use of toilet paper made with chlorine and dye .
EQUIPMENT
- Use of handicraft products in the decoration.
- Purchase of equipment with ecological criteria.
- Smoking and non smoking areas.
- Throw away cutlery, plates and drinking containers will not be used.

EXTERIORS
- Reduction of asphalted areas.

- Maximise wherever possible the green areas.
- To avoid whenever possible weed killers, pesticides and chemical fertilisers.
- To surround and disguise the parking areas with bushes and trees.
- Collection of minor waste produced by our guests to keep the beaches clean (ecological cones).
- The hotel is trying to avoid soft and short grass as this consumes large volumes of water and means that weeds have to be removed. It also means that fertiliser and herbicides which produce soil and water contamination have to be used. As an alternative the hotel's policy is to try and create large areas of Spanish grass.

- We avoid the purchase of products which are doubly packaged.
- We use refillable or returnable containers when serving food.
- Ecological chlorine systems with mineral salt are used in the swimming pool.
- Collection of used computer materials by a recycling company from this sector.
- Corporate use of e-mail with the consequent saving of paper.
- Correct handling of dangerous waste by authorised agencies.
- Composting of vegetable remains (prunings and kitchen waste)
