Grazalema is found in the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema National Park. The seven different routes on offer in this package will ensure that you can enjoy the most spectacular scenery around and be inspired by the region's natural and cultural beauty: its unique avifauna (with eagles, owls and vulture colonies), its prehistoric archaeological and Roman remains, as well as its stunning geological formations, untouched limestone mountain range and a variety of wildlife living amongst the peaks.

The distance and / or gradient of the routes on offer are recommended for hikers of all ages and fitness levels.

The mild spring, autumn and winter temperatures make the Sierra de Grazalema an ideal place for hiking. The location and facilities of the Hotel Fuerte Grazalema, one of the most renowned country house hotels in Andalusia, make it the perfect place for hiking in the region. Each one of our routes has a unique story to tell, and we offer information accompanied by photos, route distances, average completion times and difficulty level.

Routes / Programme:

On the first day, after picking up your rental car at Malaga or Jerez de La Frontera airports and having travelled to the hotel, you will receive a warm and charming welcome at Hotel Fuerte Grazalema, where the details of your excursions will be finalised.

On the 7 day package you can choose 5 out of the 9 different routes on offer, as detailed below, and with the 5 day package, 3 routes on offer. On your 'relax' days, you will definitely not be short of things to do (if you really want to do something). You can either make full use of the hotel's facilities, get lost in the streets of beautiful Grazalema, or even get acquainted with the famous town of Ronda, located just 20 kilometres from hotel.

Oferta senderísmo Route 1: Circular Route of the most spectacular views of Grazalema

A short route in which you can enjoy the best views of Grazalema and its surrounding areas.

Leaving the Hotel Fuerte Grazalema, we will arrive in central Grazalema by the Roman road after going directly through the town square, we will then walk up to the swimming pool viewpoint. We will then turn towards the right and cross the road to head towards "El Santo" and the Shrine, from where we will be able to enjoy the most spectacular views of the town. We will then head straight on through a pine forest and head towards the campsite. We will cross the main road to the other side of the town, passing the countryside firebreaks and ending up at the Fresnillo reservoir, from where we'll be able to see the Sierra de las Nieves. We will then return along the Sierra Morena peak and head down to the reservoir, and then Grazalema via the lake. We will cross the town through its iconic streets and squares and return to the hotel via the Roman road.

  • Average time: 3 to 4 hours.
  • Distance: 12 km
  • Difficulty: Medium

Oferta senderísmo Route 2: The banks of the Gaduares circular route

After leaving the Hotel Fuerte Grazalema we will head towards 'Venta de los Alamillo'. We will take the lane on the left hand side as the road splits and then continue straight on towards the right until we finally reach the los Terrajos creek, where we will encounter an abundance of wildlife, especially wild frogs. We will then take the trail to the left and head towards 'Álcornoque de las Ánimas', situated in a valley full of wild pear trees which acts as a reminder of a traditional farming era. Following this main road, we will continue southwards and to the right, where we will be surrounded by a dense cork tree plantation. We will then climb a small mountain pass, from where we'll see breathtaking views of the whole valley and the Campobuche River, and at the base of the mountain, the Patagalana dolmens (portal tombs). We will then head left along the track ascending parallel to the creek, to subsequently turn right at the gate to take us to Hoyo de la Matanza, Zurraque and Quejigo de Zurraque. We will continue climbing until we reach a chain where we will turn left taking us to the Llano del Culantro (The Culantro Plain) and the Pozo de Culantro (The Culantro well) on our left.

Once we leave the main road we will turn right (towards the opposite direction and within 2.5 km we'll be in the town of Montejaque). We will then head back the way we came heading towards Cartijo de los Calabazales (or Aguilares, as it is also known) and passing through the 'Herta de la Gorda' water source. We'll then continue along the trail to find "La Puente" (the Bridge), where we will bear right and continue on the track we previously followed. Leaving the path to the left, our trail subsequently becomes a path, surrounded by beautiful cork-oaks until we reach the El Pantanillo de Campobuche or Gaduares, one of the most scenic and relaxing parts of the route, with ducks, turtles, wild water flowers and pure tranquillity. The only way to go is along river banks to get to the Llano de los Tejares (Tejares Plains), where we will find the "Alcornoque de las Ánimas" and return to 'Venta Los Alamillos', and after turning right, we will be right back where we started.

  • Average time: 3,5 to 4 hours.
  • Distance: 21 km
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Track Wikiloc: CLICK HERE

Oferta senderísmo Route 3: Grazalema – Puerto de la Presillas – Boyar

We will leave the Grazalema square, and head towards the camp site via the main road in town's outskirts. We will take the path on the right hand side just after the campsite. We will continue climbing, and on our way we will see the amazing rock formations of the Peñon Fordo.

We will pass through the Era de Trillo, where until the mid twentieth century, wheat was separated from the chaff, and oats or chickpeas were grown in any useful small area of land. We will then arrive at the Llanos del Endrinal (Endrinal Plains), where cereals were once cultivated, whereas today pines, oaks and shrub species are now grown. Once we have crossed over the plains we will find the Pozo Pilar Abrevadero (Pilar Abrevadero well), which supplies water for the sheep and cattle grazing on this mountain. We will then slowly climb through the Puerto de las Presillas. We will then pass the old Pozos de Nieve (Snow Wells) (whose ice was used in game hunting in this area in order to keep the meat fresh during its transport to Coto Doñana, this usually took place at night so the ice would not melt) and the Pozo Pilar de las Presillas (Pilar de las Presillas Well), with its five pillars carved by hand with hammer and chisel on limestone typically found in the area. At this point we will come across an intersection where we will take the path to the right leading us to Puerto del Boyar. Before, we must take a peek at the path on the left, and just under a distance of around 500 metres after crossing the gate, we can enjoy the Las Encinas Gamelas views (as named by the working group El Tercer Tiempo).

We will then make our descent, passing the source of the Guadalete River and the 'Calera del Navazo'. At the Boyar viewpoint we will be able to enjoy 360o views of the mountains surrounding us and we'll be able to see the ionic Salto del Cabrero. We'll then head back towards the town via a beautiful route accompanying the Guadalete River.

  • Average time: 3 to 4 hours.
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Difficulty: Medium / High (due to unevenness)
  • Track Wikiloc: CLICK HERE

Oferta senderísmo Route 4: Circular Llanos de Zurraque:

Leaving the Hotel Fuerte Grazalema we will head towards 'Venta de los Alamillos'. We will take the lane on the left hand side as the road splits and then continue straight on towards the right until we finally reach los Terrajos creek, where we will come across an abundance of wildlife, especially wild frogs. We will then take the trail to the left and head towards 'Álcornoque de las Ánimas', situated in a valley full of wild pear trees and acts as a reminder of a traditional farming era.

Following this main road, we will continue southwards and to the right, where we will be surrounded by a dense cork tree plantation, where we will then climb a small mountain pass, from where we'll see breathtaking views of the whole valley and the Campobuche River, and at the base of the mountain, the Patagalana dolmens (portal tombs).

We will then left along the track ascending parallel to the creek, to subsequently turn right to take us to Hoyo de la Matanza. We will continue climbing until we reach the Llanos de Zurraque and Quejigo de Zurraque, where we will find exquisite examples of oak trees. Once through the plains we will pass the Zurraque farmhouse, the Zurraque mountain pass and descend to the 'Cerro Tinajo' via the path. We will continue descending towards la casa de la Gordilla (the Gordilla house) to then pass the Patagalana dolmens (portal tombs). We will return to the 'Alcornoque de las Ánimas' and pass the 'Venta de los Alamillos', and after following the path on our right, we will arrive at the starting point.

  • Average time: 3 to 3,5 hours (the route)
  • Distance: 18 km
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Track Wikiloc:

Oferta senderísmo Route 5: Grazalema – Salto del Cabrero – Benaocaz

Departure from Grazalema. It is one of the Sierra de Grazalema's routes frequently visited by groups of hikers and it is still used as a reference for the park's landscape, especially with its unbeatable nature and history on offer. Visit the "Salto del Cabrero", a vertical wall fault line of over 80 metres high separated by a 50-metre gorge, where griffon vultures usually nest.

Route finishes in Benaocaz. Return transport to the hotel is provided by the bus company Los Amarillos (around 2 Euros per ticket) and departs from the town's bus station at 15:30.

If you finish this route with ample time to spare, we recommend visiting the ethnological museum or getting a bite to eat at the iconic and local El Refugio restaurant serving some of the area's amazing specialties.

  • Average time: 3 to 3,5 hours (the route)
  • Distance: 14 km
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Track Wikiloc:

Oferta senderísmo Route 6: Pinsapar

The Fir Route is just simply one of the best routes in the Grazalema Natural Park, featuring a species of Fir tree only seen in the southern Mediterranean mountains of the Iberian Peninsular and the Rif mountain range in northern Morocco.

The trail starts at an altitude of 1,000 meters and runs along the northern slope of the Sierra del Pinar, towards Puerto de la Cumbres (1280 meters above sea level). During the ascent you will be able see the towns of Grazalema and Ronda from above, topped off by the Sierra de las Nieves. As we progress you will encounter an abundance of blackthorn berries and maple trees hidden away in the Fir tree forest, we will then continue onwards to the 900 metre high port city of Pinar and the Pinsapar lookout. From here, we will then return to our starting point. (You have to ask permission)

  • Average time: Depends on the distance.
  • Distance: From 8 to 16 km
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Track Wikiloc:

Oferta senderísmo Route 7: Torreón

This route will take us to the highest peak in the province of Cádiz, El Torreón at 1648 metres high. We will start walking from the Boyar lookout using the path that runs parallel to the main road until we reach the trail. Once we arrive at the trail we will then cross the main road and begin our ascent amongst Holm and Gall oak trees. A third of the route is covered a variety of wild vegetation, and hopefully with a bit luck, we will be accompanied by mountain goats and an abundance of rock masses. We will then return along the same path. At the top, we will be able to enjoy the most spectacular 360 degree views of the bay of Cadiz, the Seville Plateau, the Sierra de Líjar, the resevoirs of Los Hurones and Guadalcacín, the Sierra del Endrinal, the Simancón and finally the Reloj, located on the northern side and considered by many as the throne of Pinsapar.

  • Average time: 4 hours
  • Distance: 14 km (or alternatively just the climb itself)
  • Difficulty: Medium / High
  • Track Wikiloc:
