About Andalucía. provincial fiestas. MÁLAGA. AUGUST FAIR

Malaga’s August Fair has come to the present day as a Grand Summer Fair. The summer festivities in the city have their roots in the commemoration of the incorporation of Malaga to the Castilian crown of the Catholic Monarchs, (who made their triumphal entrance into the city on 19th August 1487), and the recovery of the image of the Virgen de la Victoria.

In 1492 a solemn procession was held with the participation of all the people of Málaga and a bullfight was even held at that time with four bulls.

The fair was held every year on and improved as time went by. Fire works started in the 17th century.

Back in 1887 the procession of the Virgen de la Victoria is taken to the streets and the famous bullfights are held, which are a typical feature of the Malaga fair.

Málaga fair, known as the Grand Fair of Southern Europe, has improved and many events are held and organised by the city Council such as exhibitions, sport competitions, apart from the traditional concerts, and of course bullfights. The fair’s closing event is a spectacular beach fish barbeque and a firework show.

During the fair week Málaga is bedecked to welcome visitors. In the morning we can enjoy the fair downtown where bars and restaurants take their bars to the streets and music and fun go on from the morning until late in the afternoon. In the evening we can still have fun at the fairground where we can find numerous ‘casetas’ or canvas pavilions or tents and very many attractions in which everyone, big or small can have fun until the early hours of dawn.
