Guide to Andalucia > How to get there > Train

TRain

The railway is the form of transport that - in terms of units transported - generates the least external costs: five times less than the transport of freight by road, three times less than transport of passengers by road, two times less than civil aviation. In some industrialized countries such as Spain, the external costs of transport (those generated by the atmospheric temperature increase in winter, by atmospheric pollution, by the accident rate for certain forms of transport, by sound pollution, as well as other environmental effects and from congestion) reach nearly 10 per cent of the GDP.

In Spain, a traveller by train consumes between three and ten times less equivalent litres of petrol than travelling by car and 20 times less than travelling by air. Specifically: this traveller consumes less than 11 for every 100 km travelled.

The surface necessary to move one physical unit of transport by air is approximately 17 times greater than by train. Modern rolling stock is practically recycleable by 95 percent, extending its utility by almost 30 years. To transport 5 per cent of the total travellers and 4 per cent of freight, RENFE on its own consumes something less than one per cent of the energy consumed by transport in Spain.
