La Herradura. Local events
The locals’ open nature and the excellent tropical climate help explain why the celebrations here are so great.
On any festive occasion, the plazas in the town fill with bars and stalls to celebrate the fiestas in the open air. Here are some of the main local fiestas:

- 19th March (San José) Patron Saint of La Herradura: loads of cultural and sporting activities. Bars are set up around the fairground beside the seashore, on the Andrés Segovia Promenade. The high-point of the fiesta is the procession of the patron saint, which moves through the Old Quarter.
- Easter: one of the great Andalusian celebrations, staging the passion of Jesus Christ. Easter in Almuñecar and La Herradura is growing bit by bit. The beautifully adorned pasos,or processions, wind through the street with the silence broken only by the Flamenco Saetas.
-
Cruces de Mayo (May Crosses): without doubt this is the traditional fiesta, not only in Almuñecar and La Herradura, but also in all of the province of Granada. It’s celebrated on the 3rd May, when the various associations, brotherhoods, collectives... go to great lengths to adorn the crosses with flowers, lending an unequalled beauty to the streets of the town.

- 23rd and 24th June, San Juan: like in any sea-side town, San Juan is a night for celebrations. Loads of bonfires are lit along the Granada coastline with people eager to celebrate with barbecues and plenty of beach-side fun.
- 16th July, Virgen del Carmen (Patron Saint of Sailors): this is special in Almuñecar, and a great tourist tradition. The main event is the sea-side procession of the Virgen del Carmen.
