La Herradura. Society and culture

La Herradura forms part of Almuñecar, along with Velilla-Taramai. In total there are 84 square kilometres at an average altitude of 24 metres above sea level.

Location. Latitude: 36°44'N; Longitude: 3°41'O

La Herradura is a small town with all your day to day requirements, as well as proximity to Almuñecar. Both towns are extremely tourist-oriented with plenty of restaurants and bars in which to enjoy the traditional local produce.

Well linked to the main Andalusian provinces: Malaga and Granada.

Almuñecar, La Herradura and Velilla-Taramay have 26,000 inhabitants according to information from the INE (National Institute of Statistics) 2006.

  • Surrounded by the Granada municipalities Otívar, Jete, Ítrabo, Salobreña and the Malaga municipality of Nerja

FIESTAS

The most important fiesta in La Herradura is on the 19th of March, in homage to the patron saint San José. Local authorities organise loads of activities, there’s a special mass for the patron saint and fantastic fireworks on the sea-side promenade.

Another important fiesta is the Virgen del Carmen on the 16th July, when the Virgin is paraded around the bay by boat.
