MARBELLA. EVENTS. Regional Festivals
The festivals that complete the yearly calendar around the whole of
Andalucía are also accessible to travellers, both local people,
who may want to celebrate fiestas in other settings, and
overseas visitors. Semana Santa is one of the most magical weeks
of the year in Málaga.
In the week between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, all
of the local parish groupings carry their statues of the
Virgin and Christ through the town. From the youngest to
the oldest, and from the poor to
the rich, everyone "arriman el hombro", lends a hand, and
participates in a week replete with traditional, culture, history,
emotion, magic and religion. The visitor can simply look, admire
and enjoy the spectacle. A fuller comprehension of Semana Santa only
comes after some years of experiencing it.
The August festival in Málaga has become the Great Summer Festival, with a sensibility that is open, cosmopolitan and international, reflecting the character of the capital of the leading tourism zone in Europe: The City of Málaga, the nerve centre of the Costa del Sol and its metropolitan area.

The feria in Estepona, as famous as that in Marbella, is celebrated at the height of summer, in the middle of July.
In spring Málaga also celebrates its highly-regarded Festival of Spanish World Cinema, and each year the festival (and its prizes), held in March, continues to grow exponentially. (More information is available at www.festivaldemalaga.com). |
