MARBELLA. TRIPS. RONDA
If you happen to be in Marbella do not miss the chance to visit one of the most beautiful and visited towns in the Andalusian community: Ronda.
Ronda is located in the Northwestern most part of the province of Málaga, just 50 km from Marbella. HISTORY:
It is one of the oldest towns in Spain. According to discoveries its origin dates back to Neolithic times although the presence of men is even older, as shown by the Paleolithic painting motives found in La Pileta Cave.
Examples of the different cultures that have existed in Ronda are to be found in the town itself and its surroundings. The remains of the Roman town of Acinipo is an example of Roman occupation in Ronda, with its perfectly kept Roman theatre.

| There are also many examples of Muslim times in the town such as the Arab baths, the Walls, and so on …
After the conquest of the town back in 1485 by Kings Ferdinand and Isabella, significant transformations occurred in the town, which have reached our times: the widening of the streets and the enlargement of the streets to form ample and wide squares, etc.
However the 18th century is no doubt the most emblematic one concerning the construction of monuments. Puente Nuevo bridge over the Tajo gorge and the Bullring were built in that century. From now on and during the 19th century is when both the legend of romanticism and the story of the town begin to grow both in the town and mountains, making the town of “Arunda” more famous thanks to the Bandolero (Bandit) and Tauromaquia (Bullfight). MONUMENTS:
Countless monuments adorn the town of Ronda, but the highlight of them which have made this town famous for are Puente Nuevo bridge over the Tajo gorge and the Bullring.
Puente Nuevo (New Bridge): This is the master work of architect José Martínez Aldehuela and above all the most traditional snapshot of Ronda. With 98 m height, it was built between 1751 and 1793, being completed in May 1793. Before that another bridge was tried to be built in less time which collapsed after six years killing some 40 persons.

The bridge linked the new part of the town and the old one and clearly helped the town to expand.
At present the bridge is the home of an interpretation centre.
The Bullring: It was first opened in 1785 after six years of works by the same architect who built Puente Nuevo, Martínez Aldehuela. Both Pedro Romero and Pepe Illo took part in the first bullfight held at the bullring.
It is one of the oldest bullrings in Spain and its arena has the world’s largest diameter. During the 20th century the Ordóñez dynasty kept increasing the myth of the bullring and Ronda as the “cradle of bullfighting”. Antonio Ordóñez created the Goyesca Bullfight on horseback, to be held every year at the beginning of September coinciding with the local festivities of Pedro Romero.
Other monuments of interest are the Mondragon Palace, the Rey Moro Palace, the Walls and Muslim Gate, the Marqués de Salvatierra Palace, the Arch of Philip V…
No doubt Ronda is one of the most beautiful towns in Andalusia. |
